Shamrock 24 Hour Adventure Race

There will be a talk on Adventure Racing on Thursday 1st March in Basecamp at 7.00 pm. It will be given by experienced adventure racers. We are hoping to get as many adventure racers there as possible. We hope to use it as a night to promote AR in Ireland. People can also meet other people and form teams….. There will be more info about this shortly!!!!! We also hope to get some virgin racers there too so we can introduce them to the wonderful sport.

The Shamrock Adventure race is a 24 hour event with a mix of navigation, mountain biking, trekking, paddling and lots of surprise extras. Aimed at seasoned adventure racers and newbies alike, the race structure will allow all the teams to finish, but will be as challenging as teams want to make it.

The race is taking place in Co. Wicklow, a region particularly suited to a 24 hour event, where teams new to 24 hour events can return to base for a few hours rest if they want. Take a look at www.shamrockar.org for all the details!

No Compressors Here

We’ve had a number of requests for bolting equipment lately, and it’s often a little tricky to explain to a customer why we refuse. While bolts do have a legitimate place in certain very specific circumstances, the risk of irresponsible use and the continuing ‘murder of the impossible’ is just too great to allow bolt kits to be easily and readily available. Bolting should only ever be carried out by extremely experienced climbers who are educated in such matters, fully aware of the impact and permanence of their actions. We plead with anyone considering making a route ‘safer’ or ‘more accessible’ to take a moment to read this article by leading alpinist Colin Haley about Maestri’s compressor bolts on Cerro Torre’s south-east ridge.
